Product Alert: 20 kg. Tool flange adapter - FAQ
Product Alert: 20 kg. Tool flange adapter - FAQ
The UR20 Tool Flange Adapter was developed to ease the initial use of the UR20 as many UR+ partners did not yet have end-effectors (tools) to directly attach to the larger UR20 tool flange that was developed for higher forces.
- Since announcing the UR30, UR realized that the adapter could be used on the UR30 at payloads exceeding its design specifications. It is therefore not included in the UR30 box. https://www.universal-robots.com/articles/ur/safety/safety-notice-20kg-tool-flange-adapter-shipped-with-ur30/
- With the release of software version 5.19 and higher, UR20 and UR30 have higher payloads which exceed the specifications of the 20kg Tool Flange Adapter. https://www.universal-robots.com/articles/ur/safety/safety-notice-20kg-tool-flange-adapter-shipped-with-ur20-robots/
Since the adapter flange was only meant as a temporary solution for UR+ partners, the Tool Flange Adapter was phased out with the release of software version 5.19 on 15 October.
If you download or have downloaded software version 5.19 or higher, you are urged to:
- Remove the Tool Flange Adapter from your UR20 and if applicable, your UR30
- Destroy (e.g. make unusable, cut in half) the Tool Flange Adapter
- Recycle and responsibly dispose of the Tool Flange Adapter OR return it to UR to handle.
- For returning the adapter flange, please reach out to your local distributor or open a MyUR ticket: https://myur.universal-robots.com Universal Robots will cover all freight charges related to this operation.
1. What is the maximum payload allowed when using the Tool Flange Adapter ?
The maximum approved payload is 20 kg, if using the recommended bolt of strength grade 8.8.
2. What can happen if the payload limit is exceeded?
Use of the Tool Flange Adapter outside of specifications can cause the end-effector (tooling) and workpiece to break loose. This could result in a serious injury or death.
3. When will it be phased out?
The adapter was phased out with the release of PS5.19 on the 15th of October.
4. Can I still buy a Tool Flange Adapter from Universal Robots?
No, Universal Robots discontinued the Tool Flange Adapter based on the foreseeable risk of it being used outside of specifications.
5. Can the adapter flange be used if I am not exceeding the 20kg Tool Flange Adapter payload limit?
- No. Universal Robots only support use of existing larger tool flange, developed for higher forces.
- If a UR20 does not use software 5.19 or higher, the Tool Flange Adapter may be used.
- However, UR strongly recommends stopping all use of the Tool Flange Adapter because use of updated software is highly recommended. Starting software version 5.19, higher payloads for the UR20 and UR30 are possible.
6. How do I choose a tool that can handle payloads above the maximum 20kg limit of the Tool Flange Adapter ?
The following UR+ partners are already providing solutions for the new enlarged UR20/UR30 tool flange.
